MERG was formed in March 2004, born from a Federal Government grant to the Shire of Yarra Ranges Sustainable Futures Project. Many of its small band of volunteers are founding members, who over the past four years have proved what a difference a devoted few can make to the environment we live in.
With support from governments, both state and federal, our many friends in business, and our partnership with Millwarra P.S. and Greening Australia the face of Millgrove’s Yarra River is changing for the better. Our group meets every second Sunday of the month at 10am, for a working “Bee followed by a great lunch put on by its members. We invite everyone to come and join our friendly group of dedicated workers and enjoy our lunch and company for just a few hours.
How we operate
M.E.R.G. was one of the first conservation groups to totally clear badly infested areas, then mulch, before replanting with indigenous plants, thanks to Bark King, and now our anonymous tree surgeons that donate mulch as soon as they see we have need for it.
Many groups are now following M.E.R.G’S lead, and do not use the old weed mat approach to planting and instead heavily mulch. Our experience with weed mat (recycled underlay) is, that it dries out in the warm weather and actually stops future rain from penetrating the surface

Write a Comment»Anzac Day 2009. Millgrove community in conjunction with Warburton RSL held our first dawn service and gun fire breakfast attended by approximately 200 people. We received very positive feedback and comments on the sincerity of the ceremony. This was very encouraging and we will endeavour to have this as an annual event for Millgrove.
